Rebel Environmental Governance (REG+) Data

REG+ data includes information on efforts by UCDP defined rebel groups to provide environmental services, respond to hazards, develop related institutions, and cooperate with other actors for all disputes over territorial claims active after 1989. 
Release date: 2025 ✧ Territorial-based conflicts ✧ Rebels active 1989 – 2020 (cross section) ✧ Global sample ✧ 162 rebel groups
Variables include:
  • Agricultural practice and land management: rebel group provision of governance related to agricultural practices and/or land management
  • Water access and security: rebel group provision of governance related to water access and water security 
  • Food access and security: rebel group provision of governance related to food access and security
  • Conservation: rebel group provision of governance related to environmental and/or wildlife conservation
  • Migration assistance related to environmental hazard: rebel group provision of governance related human migration caused by an environmental hazard
  • Climate-related disaster risk management: rebel efforts at climate-related disaster management, including the provision of disaster relief services
  • Rhetoric: rebel group use of rhetoric related to climate/environmental change or damages to justify the conflict.
  • Disaster Management Institution: rebel group created a governance body charged with disaster management 
  • Environmental Institutions: rebel group created a governance body charged with managing environmental concerns.
  • Cooperation: rebel group cooperation with another actor on environmental issues, indicators domestic NGO, international NGO, international  organization, religious organization, domestic state government, and foreign states
